VERA Oregon
VERA-OR integrates ELPA and OSAS assessment data to identify students who speak well but struggle with writing. The oral-written delta reveals Type 4 dyslexia candidates who might otherwise be overlooked.
Launch VERA-OR Request DemoType 4 Detection
Type 4 dyslexia candidates demonstrate strong oral communication abilities but significant challenges with written expression. VERA-OR uses the delta between ELPA Speaking scores and Writing domain performance to flag students for further evaluation.
ELPA Speaking domain scores measure oral language production, fluency, and comprehension in classroom contexts.
ELPA Writing domain and OSAS ELA scores capture written expression, organization, and conventions.
When the oral-written delta exceeds 8 points, the student is flagged as a Type 4 candidate requiring additional screening.
Oregon Data Systems
VERA-OR integrates with Oregon's established assessment and accountability systems, using publicly available district-level data to identify patterns that warrant individual student review.
English Language Proficiency Assessment measuring Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing for English learners.
Oregon Statewide Assessment System using Smarter Balanced for ELA and Mathematics in grades 3-8 and 11.
Oregon Department of Education provides comprehensive district and school performance data through report cards.
Federal accountability requirements track progress for all student subgroups including English Learners.
Accountability Integration
Oregon's school accountability profiles show performance across multiple indicators. VERA-OR displays these alongside Type 4 detection to reveal how identification gaps affect overall outcomes.
Oregon uses ELPA composite and domain scores to determine English Learner exit eligibility. Students with high speaking but low writing scores may meet oral thresholds while struggling academically.
Under ESSA, Oregon must demonstrate progress for all student subgroups. Identifying Type 4 candidates helps districts provide appropriate interventions that improve outcomes.
Oregon tracks four-year and five-year graduation rates by subgroup. Early Type 4 identification can improve long-term outcomes for students who struggle with written expression.
Pilot Districts
Initial deployment includes Oregon's largest and most diverse districts, selected for their significant English Learner populations and established data reporting infrastructure.
